In contrast, the Uttarakhanda comprises a varying number of chapters, typically ranging from 34 to 49, and is often referred to as 'Pretakhanda' or 'Pretakalpa.'

Significantly, approximately 90% of the text is found in the Purvakhanda, encompassing various subjects related to life and existence. The Uttarakhanda primarily addresses topics concerning the soul's journey post-mortem and rituals associated with death. The composition of the Garuda Purana likely followed that of the Agni Purana, diverging from typical Puranic literature by sharing wisdom heard by Garuda from Lord Vishnu and subsequently conveyed to sage Kashyapa.

The first section elaborates on worship practices dedicated to Vishnu and underscores the recommendation of listening to the Garuda Purana following death as a means for spiritual advancement. The second section provides detailed accounts of how souls experience various fates in different hells after death. It elucidates the conditions of rebirth across diverse realms, methods for liberation from ghostly states, rituals for ancestral offerings (Shraddha), and pathways to attain moksha from the sufferings associated with hell.
